"Thanks," replied Moonpetal, her sister always knew what to say to cheer her up. She grinned as they kept walking, the thought about her lost mate floated to the back of her mind, but still there it haunted her.

Featherleaf's heart pounded with pain and envy. Her mate was dead like Moonpetal's was. But one thing she would have that she wouldn't was kits. Featherleaf's only litter had died on a night in leaf-bare. "I remember what it was like to have kits..." she whisperd. "But I remember how it was when they died more." she could still feel the pain pulsing through her heart, the grief overcoming her usally raspy voice. Her tail drooped and she felt like claws were slashing inside. She tried to say more. But when she opened her mouth, nothing came out but a choking sob. She had tried to forget about the death of her mate and two sons. Now that it came back, she didn't know if she could forget about them again.

Poor Featherleaf, thought Moonpetal, she didnt have a mate or kits. Moonpetal had her sister and her kits. She was lucky.

A couple days later the kits were born and Sunfeather came to congratulate Moonpetal once again
